We learned how Vipassana meditation informs Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program. We were instructed systematically in Vipassana meditation – both sitting and walking and in mindful yoga. We experienced how to steady your mind, being open to insight, and develop profound clarity and depth in our meditation practice. Bob teached the traditional four foundations of mindfulness, combined with training in loving-kindness and compassion, through daily silent sitting, walking, yoga, meditation talks and personal meetings with the teacher.
In the last 35 years Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and other Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBI) have spread exponentially throughout the world. Mindfulness has become very popular, a ”hot item” in medicine, neuroscience, psychology, education, and business and yet at times, little is known of it’s origins. This retreat will explore and emphasize how the Western Insight (Vipassana) Meditation Tradition influences mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and all mindfulness-based interventions (MBI). MBSR is derived most importantly from mindfulness meditation, along with stress psychology, and group process.

has founded seven Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programs in medical centers in the SFBay Area and is currently offering programsat Dominican Hospital and El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos and Mt. View. Dr. Stahl serves as a Senior Teacher for Oasis Institute for Mindfulness-Based Professional Educationand Training at Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Bob is co-author of 5 books: A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook, Living With Your Heart Wide Open, Calming the Rush of Panic, A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook for Anxiety, and MBSR Everyday. Bob is a long time teacher in the Insight Meditation tradition, he has lived more than 8 years in a monastery with Forest Monks. Today, he is the guiding teacher at Insight Santa Cruz and a visiting teacher at Spirit Rock. He also teaches retreats every year in all continents.
